Overview
Zarautz is a very consistent beachbreak on a long sandy beach, with several left and right peaks along its length. It is one of Spain’s most popular surfing beaches and has a high standard of surfing in the water.
The waves are generally good quality and performance-focused, and the spot can work even in small swells. The bottom is sand.
When It Works
Zarautz is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. It does not need much swell, though west swells can struggle to get in.
The best swell direction is northwest, with west to north swell also in the window. Autumn and winter are the main seasons, with September to February noted as the key run.
When the size picks up, the paddle out can get heavy.
Wind and Tide
The offshore wind direction is south.
Zarautz works through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide better.
Local Tips
This is a very busy spot, especially on the main peaks, and the level of surfing is high. The lineup is highly competitive, with a strong local crew.
Beginners do surf here, and there are many surf schools, but crowds, beginners, and bailed boards are real hazards. Shortboards, funboards, fish, longboards, and bodyboards are all used here.
Access
There are good facilities, including restrooms, showers, lifeguards, surf schools, and surf shops in the nearby town centre.
Roadside parking is available, but parking is difficult in summer and at weekends, and can be almost impossible at peak times.
Water quality can be affected by residential and stormwater runoff, especially after heavy rain.
