Overview
Zumaia is a consistent, small-wave beach break with a sand bottom that offers up both lefts and rights. When the sandbanks line up, it produces good, well-defined peaks.
When It Works
The break draws swell from northwest to north (NW-N), with north (N) swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, and it stays fairly consistent, so there are usually workable days when the banks cooperate.
Wind and Tide
Look for south (S) offshore wind to clean things up. Zumaia is best at low tide but also works on mid, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The waves suit intermediate surfers. Expect a busier lineup on weekends, and keep in mind there can be some estuarine and stormwater pollution.
Access
There's a car park at the beach, though spaces can be hard to come by during peak summer and on weekends. A summer lifeguard and showers round out the facilities.
