Surfing in Del Libertador B Ohiggins

Del Libertador B Ohiggins is a point-break coastline on central Chile's Pacific shore, where steady west and southwest swell feeds a run of long left-hand points centered on Pichilemu. Most Del Libertador B Ohiggins surf spots are points rather than beach peaks; eight of the nine breaks are points, mostly over sand with sections of uneven reef, so the appeal is in walls that run rather than short close-outs.

Pichilemu is the hub, holding the largest cluster of breaks, while the surrounding towns of La Boca, Los Maquis, Matanzas, and Tuman round out the coast. Notable spots include Punta de Lobos, Puertecillo, and Pichilemu - La Puntilla, the first a famous big-wave left that can hold serious size on the bigger swells. Beginner-friendly picks include Pichilemu - La Puntilla and Matanzas, gentler options for surfers still building confidence, while the bulk of the coast suits intermediates and a couple of spots reward experts once it gets big.

The swell window is broad but has a clear core. Every spot here works on west and southwest swell, and most also pick up south and south-southwest energy, so the coast is at its most reliable when the Pacific sends a solid west to southwest pulse. A handful of breaks can also catch northwest and northerly swell, which widens the options on less common swell days. Minimum size sits around chest to head high at most spots, and the range runs from playful to heavy depending on where you paddle out, with the standout points able to hold well overhead.

Wind is the deciding factor day to day. Easterly wind is the friend here, with east and southeast the most common offshore directions, so early mornings before the sea breeze fills in tend to be cleanest. Tides are forgiving: every spot works at low tide, and many also come in at mid and high, so you can usually find something surfable across most of the cycle. Autumn stands out as a productive season, when swell and cleaner wind patterns often line up.

For a plan, base yourself around Pichilemu and treat the points as your first look on a west to southwest swell with an offshore easterly, then adjust by size and skill. The mellower stretches near La Puntilla and Matanzas suit smaller, friendlier days, while heavier points like Punta de Lobos come into their own when there is real swell and the experience to match it. A shortboard covers most conditions, though the variety of breaks leaves room for everything from a fish on small days to a gun when it maxes out.
