Punta de Lobos Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Punta de Lobos is a left-hand pointbreak on the Chilean coast, breaking over a mix of uneven reef and sand. It's a spot with genuine range and many moods, a long point that shifts from mellow inside sections to serious big-wave walls depending on swell and tide. It ranks among Chile's standout lefts and is the closest high-quality pointbreak to Santiago, so it rarely goes to waste.

When It Works

The point draws swell from south through west, with southwest swell the best match. It's usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 9.1 m / 30 ft, a huge working window that runs from playful head-high days all the way up to full big-wave conditions. Consistency is a real strength here: it's one of the most reliable setups around and comes into its best form in autumn. On smaller days the wave breaks in shorter sections toward the top of the point, while bigger swells link the walls together for long, drawn-out rides.

Wind and Tide

Look for east offshore wind. The cliffs shelter the lineup from the prevailing southwest wind, so it stays clean far more often than not. It can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call, and it tends to favor lower water while still breaking right through.

Local Tips

Bring a shortboard for the smaller, sectiony days and a gun when it gets big. It suits intermediate surfers on average conditions, but once it pushes above double-overhead it becomes experts-only. Expect a busy lineup, as this is one of the more crowded spots in Chile, though several distinct takeoff zones help spread the pack out.

Access

Park right at the tip of the point, either in the car park with free parking or along the roadside. A surf school and surf shop are on hand nearby.
