Punta de Lobos surf guide

Punta de Lobos is a famous surf spot located in Chile, known for its consistent waves and stunning scenery. It’s often packed with surfers looking to ride some quality lefts and enjoy the beach vibe. This spot is relatively close to Santiago, making it accessible for those wanting to score some solid surf without traveling too far. Expect a lively atmosphere, especially in the summer when it’s a popular destination for both surfers and beachgoers.

The surf here can range from head high to well over double overhead, which is about 1.5 to 12 meters. Southwest swells are optimal, but the spot can handle south and west swells too. Lobos is known for its long, peeling lefts, with rides often reaching up to 200 yards. The waves come in a bit slower, giving surfers time to navigate and set up for bowls. As the wave height increases, the take-off zone moves further out, especially when the waves hit solid double-overhead or higher. Lower tides are preferred for better conditions, although it can break at any tide level. Keep in mind that the paddle-out can be a serious workout, especially on larger days.

The local crowd can be significant, making Punta de Lobos one of the busiest spots in Chile after Renaca. While you'll find a mix of local and expat surfers, there are several take-off zones to help spread the lineup. It's definitely a place where intermediate surfers can test their skills, especially on more manageable days. Just remember to respect the locals and enjoy the ride!
