Infiernillo surf guide

Infiernillo is a surf spot located near La Puntilla. It’s best known for its barreling left waves that can really pack a punch. When the swell is small and not quite getting into the bay at La Puntilla, Infiernillo comes to life. This spot is usually a bit too fast for most average surfers, but those who are up for the challenge often compare its quality to well-known breaks like Punta Lobos. Keep in mind that it offers no wind protection and is open to all kinds of swells, making it a spot to keep an eye on during small to moderate glassy days.

The optimal swell direction here is from the Southwest, and it can handle swell sizes up to around 4 feet (about 1.2 meters). The waves break over uneven reef and sand, creating a mix that can be unpredictable. The point break usually delivers fast left waves, which can be exciting but tough to catch. If you're planning to surf here, low tide will generally give you faster waves, while high tide can make them a bit more manageable but doesn't fix the fact that the paddle-out can be tricky. Since it's a point break, getting pinned on the inside is something to watch out for.

This spot is better suited for strong intermediates and advanced surfers. If the waves are firing, you can expect a decent crowd in the water. The preferred wind direction is from the East, so keep that in mind for your visit. It’s always a good idea to check the conditions and be prepared for anything, especially since the waves can sometimes catch you off guard.

Forecast Cheat Sheet

Short on time? Focus on wave energy. It’s the best single metric to gauge how big and powerful the waves will be.

Click any table cell to jump to that forecast hour. The map will update with forecast arrows, so you can see if wind and swell direction are lining up.

Use the table sidebar to switch units for height and speed.

Log your surf sessions to compare forecasts with real sessions and sharpen future predictions.

On the map, click a metric label to bring that arrow to the front — handy when arrows overlap.

Models and Updates

Surfnerd blends multiple global and local wind and swell models using advanced interpolation and spatial techniques to create an "ensemble" forecast. Forecasts are refreshed hourly.

Surf Predictions

Our AI-driven algorithm scores surf quality, shown by green, orange, and gray dots. Each forecast hour is rated for wind, swell, and tide quality, then combined into an overall score. Here’s the scale:

Perfect
Good
Average
Bad or No Data

Session logs also feed the algorithm — the more you log, the smarter your forecasts get.

Wind certainty

Wind certainty tells you how much the weather models agree on the forecast.

  • High certainty: Models agree closely; forecast is reliable.
  • Medium certainty: Some disagreement; conditions may shift slightly.
  • Low certainty: Models diverge; treat forecast with caution.

We calculate this by comparing wind speed, gust and direction from multiple models (like GFS, ECMWF, Arome, and Harmonie) and seeing how closely they match. They are weighted, meaning that some models count more than others, depending on how good they are for a certain spot.
