Loire-Atlantique sits on France's Atlantic coast just south of Brittany, a broadly west-facing stretch of shoreline that turns incoming Atlantic swell into an approachable mix of sandy beach breaks and a couple of rockier reefs. It is a good region for surfers who want approachable, manageable waves rather than heavy power, with terrain that suits beginners finding their feet as much as intermediates chasing cleaner faces.
Most surf spots in Loire-Atlantique face into a western swell window, working anywhere from the southwest through west to northwest. That broad exposure means the coast catches something across a range of Atlantic systems, though the beaches favour a bit of size before they come to life. Offshore conditions line up best on a northerly wind, occasionally swinging northeast, so early sessions with a light north breeze tend to hold the cleanest shape.
Tide matters here. Most breaks work through the middle of the tide, and many stay rideable down toward low, while only a few hold up at high. If you are planning a session, aim for the push around mid and low tide for the widest window. Swell size is forgiving at the sandy beaches, which can start breaking on knee- to waist-high days of around a foot, while the reefs want a touch more energy before they turn on. Most spots top out around head-high to six feet, with one reef able to handle bigger, punchier swell closer to eight feet.
The variety splits fairly cleanly. The beach breaks over sand are the friendliest option and the natural choice for beginners and improvers, spread around towns like Pornichet, Batz-sur-Mer, Saint-Brevin-les-Pins, and Préfailles. The reefs break over uneven rock and reward intermediates who can read a shifting takeoff. Notable spots include Gohaud, La Courance, and La Govelle, which give a good sense of the range from mellow sand-bottom peaks to sharper reef setups.
For most visitors the move is simple: check for a west to northwest swell, look for a northerly wind, and time the session around mid to low tide. Get those lining up and Loire-Atlantique delivers a friendly, varied coastline where you can pick a wave to match your level.
