Surfing in Santa Rosa

Santa Rosa runs along Guatemala's Pacific coast, a stretch of dark volcanic sand where beach breaks and a river mouth turn southerly swell into rideable waves. This is a Pacific-facing coastline, so it feeds on south, southwest, and southeast swell, which gives it a wide swell window and steady options for scoring a session. The waves here mostly suit intermediate surfers, breaking over sand and holding size from around 2 feet up to 6 to 8 feet on the bigger days.

Northeast wind blows offshore, cleaning up the faces when the land breeze holds, so early mornings tend to be the most reliable window before the onshore sea breeze fills in. Tides are forgiving, with surfable waves through low, mid, and high, so timing comes down to swell and wind more than chasing a narrow tide.

The main towns strung along this coast are El Paredon, Hawaii, and Monterrico, each with its own beach access. El Paredon has grown into the region's best-known surf base, an easygoing black-sand beach break that works well for improving surfers and picks up plenty of the incoming south swell. Monterrico is better known for its wildlife and turtle nesting than for standout waves, but its beach catches the same swell lines. Notable spots include Hawaii, Las Lisas, and Monterrico for surfers wanting to spread out along the coastline.

If you are lining up surf spots in Santa Rosa, expect straightforward beach-break peaks rather than long point setups, with the cleanest, punchiest waves showing when a solid south or southwest swell meets a light northeast wind. It is a good coast for intermediates comfortable with beach-break paddle-outs and shifting sandbars, and a relaxed alternative to the busier surf zones further up Central America's Pacific coast.
