Islands is Hong Kong's outlying-island surf zone, a run of south-facing sandy beaches spread mainly across Lantau where gentle bays catch swell rolling in from the south. Every break here is a beach break over sand, which keeps the setups forgiving and makes this one of the more approachable corners of the region for learning. All three spots suit beginners, so surfing in Islands leans toward easy paddle-outs and soft, rolling waves rather than heavy or technical surf.
The spots gather around a few small coastal towns, including Pui O San Wai Tsuen, San Shek Wan, and Tai Long Wan Cun. Notable spots include Cheung Sha, Pui O, and Big Wave Bay, with Cheung Sha stretching along one of Lantau's longest beaches. Because these are sandbars, the shape shifts and reforms with the sand and can vary from one day to the next.
For swell, look south. These beaches come alive on anything from the southeast through south to southwest, so a southern swell window is what wakes the region up. Waves tend to stay on the smaller side, roughly waist- to head-high at the top end, which reinforces the beginner-friendly feel while still giving improvers room to link turns.
Wind is the other half of the equation. Northwesterly winds groom most of these beaches offshore, with a northeasterly favoring one spot, so a northerly airflow tends to clean up the faces. Tide is flexible here: the spots can work through low, mid, and high water, so you can usually find a rideable window without timing it too tightly.
Put together, Islands reads as a small, beginner-leaning collection of south-facing beach breaks that light up on southern swell with a northerly offshore. It rewards patience for the right swell more than raw size, and when a clean south pulse meets a light northwesterly, the outlying beaches around Lantau offer some of Hong Kong's most relaxed waves.
