Surfing in Nayarit

Nayarit lines Mexico's central Pacific coast, where a run of points and reefs picks up swell from the southwest through west and grooms clean on offshore winds out of the northeast. Surfing in Nayarit centers on the stretch from Punta de Mita north toward San Blas, a coastline built more for peeling walls than heavy beach break, with intermediate-friendly waves making up the bulk of the options.

Point breaks are the signature here. Most come alive on a south-to-west swell window, favoring uneven reef and sand bottoms, and they hold size from waist-high days up to head-and-a-half or bigger when a stronger pulse arrives. Reefs round out the lineup, usually wanting a touch more swell and sitting best through mid and high tide, while the handful of sand-bottom beaches give beginners a gentler, more forgiving entry point. Across the region most spots break through low and mid tide, so timing stays flexible and you can usually find something working outside the very top of the tide.

Punta de Mita anchors the southern end with the densest cluster of spots, and the towns of San Francisco (San Pancho) and San Blas each add their own setups further up the coast. San Blas is famous for exceptionally long right-hand point rides in the Bay of Matanchén, among the longest waves anywhere when the swell lines up. Notable spots include Aticama, Costa Azul, and Costa Banderas, spread across the different zones so you can move with the conditions and the tide.

Offshore mornings tend to come from the northeast and north, so early sessions before the sea breeze fills in are usually the cleanest. The swell menu leans on southwest energy, which means the region turns on through the warmer months when south and southwest groundswell is most reliable, though wrapping west and northwest swells keep things ticking over at other times of year. Many spots start working on knee-to-waist swell around 2 feet, so it does not take a huge forecast to get wet, while the bigger reefs and points can handle a solid 8-to-12-foot day.

For ability, this is largely an intermediate coast. Confident surfers linking turns on a point will find the most to work with, experts have a few heavier reef options to seek out, and beginners are best pointed toward the sand-bottom beaches and mellower zones around the towns. A fish or shortboard suits the punchier days, while a longboard or funboard earns its keep on the smaller, longer-walled mornings that Nayarit does so well.
