Surfing in Seychelles means chasing small, seasonal swell across a scattered granite-and-coral archipelago in the western Indian Ocean, where the surf leans heavily on south and southeast energy rather than any single marquee coastline. The best-known breaks are spread thinly across the islands, so the country rewards surfers who are willing to move between bays as swell and wind line up.
Most spots pick up swell from the south through southeast, with south-southeast and pure south directions close behind, which reflects the long-period energy that wraps in during the southeast monsoon between roughly May and September. A handful of north- and east-coast breaks work on east, east-southeast, and northeast swell instead, so the coastline is not a single rule: what turns on in the south often sits flat in the north, and the other way around.
Wind is usually the deciding factor. Many of the more consistent spots want a northeast wind to clean up south-facing bays, and some prefer northwest, so light offshore mornings before the trades fill in tend to be the play. Tides are forgiving; most breaks handle high, mid, and low water, which widens your session window once the swell arrives.
The lineup is split fairly evenly between sand-bottom beach breaks and coral reef. On Mahé, Takamaka holds beach breaks like Police Bay and Anse Intendance over sand, while Baie Lazare mixes beach and reef at Anse Gaulette and Anse aux Poules Bleues. Anse Royale leans to coral reef with Anse Bougainville and La Passe, stepping up toward more advanced surf. Quieter corners round out the map: Barbarons at Grand Anse Mahé sits over live coral, Carana at Glacis and Grande Anse near Port Glaud are gentler sand beaches, and Northeast Point near De Quincey Village is a demanding east-swell reef. Out on the inner islands, La Digue and spots like Grande Anse, Pointe Camille, and Frégate Island add more beach and reef variety.
Ability level runs mostly intermediate, with several friendly beginner beaches and a couple of reef setups better left to confident, experienced surfers. Wave size is modest, typically filling in from around chest height and topping out overhead on the better days, so this is a place for fun, playful sessions rather than heavy power.
