New Taipei City surrounds the northern tip of Taiwan, where sandy beach breaks catch open swell wrapping down the coastline. The surf here is friendly, forgiving terrain built on soft sand bottoms rather than reef, which makes it some of the most approachable water on the island for surfers still finding their feet.
Every break in the area works best on swell out of the north, from due north through northeast, with a few spots also picking up energy from the east and the occasional southeast pulse. That northern exposure is the defining trait of surfing in New Taipei City: when a system tracks down from the north or a typhoon swings swell across the open Pacific, the coast lights up. Southwest and south winds groom these beaches cleanest, holding the faces smooth when they blow offshore.
The waves come alive from around a foot of swell and stay manageable up to roughly six to eight feet, a range that keeps things playful without turning heavy. Tide is rarely a dealbreaker, since the beach breaks shift and reform through low, mid, and high water, giving you a wide window to time a session around your day rather than the clock.
The coastline splits into a handful of towns worth knowing. Baishawan sits on the north-facing shore near the top of the island, Fulong Beach stretches out on the northeast corner with its long ribbon of sand, and Jin Shan rounds out the trio between them. Fulong, Xinsheng, and Zhongjiao each anchor a break, so it is easy to move along the coast and read which stretch is catching the swell best on a given morning.
For beginners, this is prime ground. Sand-bottom beach breaks, gentle size, and a forgiving tide window make New Taipei City a natural place to log hours and build confidence. Check the north swell and the wind, pick the beach that lines up, and paddle out.
