Surfing in Vietnam centres on the country's central coast, where a run of sand-bottomed beaches faces the sea and picks up swell during the northeast monsoon months. Most of the surf here is beginner-friendly, with waves that tend to stay small and rideable rather than heavy, which makes the central coast a practical place to learn or to log easy sessions on a longer board.
The waves group into three coastal areas. Da Nang holds the widest spread, with sandy beach breaks and one point break across town beaches such as My Khe, Non Nuoc, and Nam O Point. Further south, the Quang Nam coast adds a couple of beach breaks at China Beach and Cua Dai Beach. To the north, the Thura Thien-Hue area offers a small pair of beaches at Lang Co and Binh An. These last two areas carry only a couple of spots each, so treat them as local pockets rather than long stretches of consistent surf.
Most breaks work over sand, which keeps entries and wipeouts forgiving, and they respond best to swell from the north through the east. North, northeast, and east directions feed the majority of spots, so that is the window to watch. Cleaner conditions tend to come with west and southwest winds, making early mornings worth chasing before the sea breeze fills in. Tide is rarely a hard gate here; many of these beaches stay surfable across high, mid, and low water, though each spot has its own preferred window.
Wave size is generally modest, occasionally building larger when a stronger northeast pulse arrives. Because the coast relies on that seasonal swell rather than steady groundswell, timing matters. Compare swell size and direction, wind, tide, season, and the character of each break before you commit. Lean on a shortboard only when the forecast shows real size; otherwise a funboard or longboard will get the most out of these gentle, sandy walls.
