Overview
Ajo is a northwest-facing beachbreak that works as a real swell magnet, picking up surf when many other spots are too small to bother with. It breaks over sand and peels both left and right across a large beach with plenty of room to spread out.
When It Works
The bank draws swell from west to north (W-N), with northwest (NW) the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, and it picks up swell consistently enough that you can usually find something rideable. In winter it often turns out of control, so it tends to be at its best outside the biggest storm periods.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast (SE) offshore wind. Both Playa Cuberris and Antuerta break best at low to mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. You also get some shelter here from the northeast sea breezes that kick in over summer.
Local Tips
Ajo suits intermediate surfers. Keep an eye out for strong rips along this stretch.
Access
There's a car park with free parking, which is rarely a problem except in summer. Facilities are good, with showers, a lifeguard, and camping and shops nearby. Expect some slight river pollution, and nudists tend to gather at Antuerta.
