Overview
Approach Lights is the most obvious wave on Gan, a left that reels down a live coral reef right in front of the new runway.
When It Works
The reef picks up swell from southwest through southeast (SW-SE), with southwest swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, and outside sets can push past 10 ft (3 m) and really throw.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind. The reef can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call, and the end section by the airport lights becomes more rideable and safer as the water fills in.
Local Tips
This is strictly an expert wave, breaking over live coral with heavy outside sets, so it rewards surfers who are confident on serious reef.
Access
You can walk from Equator Village and paddle across the wide lagoon, but it's safer to take a dhoni and jump straight into the lineup.
