Arugam Bay surf guide

Arugam Bay, often just called A-Bay, is a well-known surf spot located on the eastern coast of Sri Lanka. It's been a part of the Indian Ocean surf trail for a while and has developed a laid-back vibe that's appealing to many surfers. The beach is lined with sand and some rocks, offering a chill atmosphere where surfers can enjoy the sun and waves. This spot can get pretty crowded, especially during the peak surf season from May to August, so be ready to share the waves with many other surfers.

The surf at Arugam Bay works best with southeast swells, but it can also catch some action from the southwest. It's ideal for waves in the 2 to 6 ft. (0.6 to 1.8 meters) range, and the rides are typically long, with right-handed point breaks that can go on for hundreds of meters. You might find some fun, playful sections that are more about flowing rides than heavy power, though there are also times when the waves can offer a bit of hollow action. This spot is more suited for intermediate surfers, as the line-up can be chaotic with drop-ins, snaking, and the occasional bad vibe.

The surf tends to be consistent, but do watch out for the afternoon southeast sea breeze, which can chop things up a bit. At low tide, it can get shallow and tricky over the old coral reef, so keep that in mind when you're out there. The preferred conditions usually align with low to mid tide and a west wind, giving you the best chance to enjoy the waves. There are a lot of local surfers in the area, and surf competitions are regularly held, making for an interesting atmosphere.

Wind certainty

Wind certainty tells you how much the weather models agree on the forecast.

  • High certainty: Models agree closely; forecast is reliable.
  • Medium certainty: Some disagreement; conditions may shift slightly.
  • Low certainty: Models diverge; treat forecast with caution.

We calculate this by comparing wind speed, gust and direction from multiple models (like GFS, ECMWF, Arome, and Harmonie) and seeing how closely they match. They are weighted, meaning that some models count more than others, depending on how good they are for a certain spot.

Forecast Cheat Sheet

Short on time? Focus on wave energy. It’s the best single metric to gauge how big and powerful the waves will be.

Click any table cell to jump to that forecast hour. The map will update with forecast arrows, so you can see if wind and swell direction are lining up.

Use the table sidebar to switch units for height and speed.

Log your surf sessions to compare forecasts with real sessions and sharpen future predictions.

Models and Updates

Surfnerd blends multiple global and local wind and swell models using advanced interpolation and spatial techniques to create an "ensemble" forecast. Forecasts are refreshed hourly.

Surf Predictions

Our AI-driven algorithm scores surf quality, shown by green, orange, and gray dots. Each forecast hour is rated for wind, swell, and tide quality, then combined into an overall score. Here’s the scale:

Perfect
Good
Average
Bad or No Data

Session logs also feed the algorithm — the more you log, the smarter your forecasts get.
