Avaavaroa Passage is an expert-only right-hand reef break that throws thick, ferocious barrels over live coral, sitting opposite the Palm Grove Resort. When it turns on, the rights offer genuine pits for determined tube riders, but the shallow coral and demanding nature keep this one strictly for experienced surfers.
When It Works
The passage draws swell from southwest through southeast, with southwest (SW) the best match, and it's moderately consistent. It works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, though direction, size and period all matter here: the wrong combination can shut the skinny channel down into a close-out. Moderate SW swells are when it truly comes alive.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind, which lines up with the summer season. The wave breaks on mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. Time your session carefully, because a dropping tide sends the currents racing through the channel, so paddle out over the reef well before mid tide approaches.
