Overview
Balangan is a left-hand reef break tucked into a beautiful bay that has so far managed to dodge major development. It breaks over dead coral and has a mirage-like, spinning quality, though it can turn sectiony and close out depending on the swell and the tide.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from south through west (S-W), with southwest swell the best match. It is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft, but the wave really comes alive from overhead to double overhead on a southwest to west-southwest swell. More south in the swell can make it peakier and run more parallel to the reef. The first peak sits in front of the huge cave and undercut headland, letting you in before you have to race the speeding wall and tube down toward the middle of the bay, where the next pack is already dropping into the swinger sets.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast offshore wind. The reef works through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call and mid tide the standout.
Local Tips
Small swells are manageable for intermediates, while the bigger days are strictly for experienced surfers ready to charge.
