Bamburgh is a long, northeast-facing beach break that sits beneath the turrets of Bamburgh Castle, and it's the best-known and most consistent setup in the Northumbria area. The sand runs a couple of miles south toward the village of Seahouses, throwing up peaks, shifting sandbanks and the odd rocky outcrop, while a reef to the north of the castle can serve up fun lefts. That northeast-facing aspect makes it a genuine swell magnet, and the castle backdrop, strong currents and resident seals give it a wild, scenic feel.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from north through east-northeast to southeast (N-ENE-SE), with northeast (NE) swell the best match. It comes alive on groomed north and northeast swells rolling out of the Arctic, and the occasional southeasterly winter swell can deliver too. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft over the sand, breaking both left and right. Autumn and winter are the times to be here, roughly September through February when the North Sea wakes up. Expect it to sit flat through much of the summer, then fire into fun peaks once the swell arrives.
Wind and Tide
Look for southwest (SW) offshore wind. It breaks through the tides, so you have plenty of options, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a forgiving, versatile beach that suits everyone from beginners to experts, and it handles just about any craft, from shortboards and fish to longboards, SUPs, bodyboards and bodysurfing. The lineup stays quiet and can feel a little reserved, though newcomers are usually met with a friendly welcome. Keep an eye out for rips once it gets over waist high, and expect more current when it's really pumping.
Access
There are car parks to the north and south of the castle, tucked behind the dunes, with a mix of free and paid parking plus roadside options.
