Bay Head Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Bay Head is one of New Jersey's best beachbreaks for tube riding, a stretch of sandbar rights shaped by short jetties along a mile-long run of coast. The groins around Bridge Avenue sit a little longer than those to the south, and when the sand lines up they help build fast, hollow, ruler-edged rights that break in shallow water. On the right day it can push close to world-class.

When It Works

The bars come alive during south swells and hurricane season. The best direction is south (S), though the spot draws swell anywhere from the northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S). It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, and smaller swells usually don't deliver much. The season runs through autumn and winter, roughly September to March, and it stays fairly consistent when the sand is in position.

Wind and Tide

Look for west (W) offshore wind to clean things up. Bay Head can work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is an intermediate wave that suits a shortboard or fish. Expect a busy lineup, especially on south swells, though the crowd spreads out over the long run of jetties and the atmosphere stays friendly. Paddling is mellow most of the time, but rips can form around the groins on bigger days.

Access

Access is easy, though parking is limited. You'll find free roadside, metered, and restricted spots, and roadside parking can be a hassle in summer. Lifeguards patrol the beach, and there are tag and 10am-5pm restrictions to keep in mind.
