Big Wave Bay LT is a sand-bottomed beach break on the island of Lantau in Hong Kong. The name is a source of confusion, since three separate spots here are called Tai Long Wan, or Big Wave Bay, and this is the one on Lantau. Much of the island is set aside as country parks, with rugged terrain climbing steeply to 930 m / 3050 ft and long stretches of untouched hinterland behind the coast.
When It Works
The break draws swell from southwest through southeast, with southwest swell the best match. It is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, and the peaks offer both lefts and rights. Rideable days are rare here, arriving mainly on the occasional south or typhoon swell, and it can be somewhat inconsistent even when a swell does show.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind. The beach can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The gentle beach break is well suited to beginners, and the lineup tends to stay fairly quiet.
Access
Getting here is a short taxi from the ferry pier, around $15. Watch for rocks scattered along the beach. If you want to stay over, there is camping nearby.
