Overview
Boulters Bay, also spelled Boulders Bay, tucks into a small cove at the west end of Fitzroy, on the same stretch known as East End Beach. It's a mellow reef-style left that peels over boulders and sand, throwing up super-fun walls that suit just about everyone. Despite the name it isn't really a pointbreak, the river has pushed boulders a fair way out, and the bay is more of an easygoing, forgiving wave than a standout.
When It Works
The bay pulls in swell from southwest to north (SW-N), and it comes to life best on a southwest (SW) swell. It's usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, so there's a decent working range once a swell fills in. Expect moderately consistent conditions rather than something that fires every session.
Wind and Tide
Boulters likes water on the sandbanks and boulders, so it favours higher tides, with mid and high both in play and a rising tide the better call. For wind, a southeast (SE) direction blows offshore, and it generally holds up nicely under any southerly.
Local Tips
This is a friendly wave for beginners finding their feet, and it's a favourite of the local longboard crew. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.
Access
Getting here is easy: there's a car park right in front of the bay with free parking, plus roadside spots if you need them. From New Plymouth city centre, head east on Devon Street East, turn left onto Hobson Street, then right onto Buller Street to find a park. Don't be surprised by the piles of large driftwood logs scattered along the beach.
