Brandon Bay surf guide

Brandon Bay is a large bay known for its various wind and swell options. The area offers a mix of waves, but the banks can be fairly shapeless and often lack quality. Despite this, it's a decent spot to check out if you're in the mood for some casual surfing. South of Mossies, there’s a section called Dumps that sometimes delivers short barrels, giving you a glimpse of something a bit more fun. The bay is popular with windsurfers, so expect to see a mix of water sports enthusiasts around.

The surf here can pick up a good amount of swell, particularly from the north and west. It handles swell sizes starting at 2 ft (about 0.6 m) and is suitable for beginners since the waves break over sand. You can expect both left and right wave directions, which can be a nice feature for surfers who want to practice. The best time to hit the waves is when the wind comes from the southeast and during low, mid, or high tides. This flexibility with tides gives you multiple options for when to surf.

There's a park right behind the dunes where you can chill out before or after your sessions. The setting is pretty relaxed, making it a good spot for hanging out with friends or just kicking back after catching some waves. Just remember that while the surf can be fun at times, it’s not always the best quality, so don’t expect every session to be epic.
