Overview
Canggu is a reef break just north of Kuta on Bali's black-sand coast, throwing up both lefts and rights over a mix of uneven reef and sand. The black sand moves around the reef and the sets shift with it, so the peaks are rarely in quite the same place twice. It usually runs a touch bigger than Kuta, and there are more peaks scattered down the beach towards Pererenan.
When It Works
Canggu pulls in swell from south-southeast through south to west (SSE-S-W), and it lines up best on a southwest (SW) swell. It works from 0.4 m / 1 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, giving a wide window between too small and too big. With both lefts and rights breaking over the reef, there's usually a peak to choose from when it's on.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind, with a workable window running from northeast to southeast (NE-SE). On the tide, low tide is the pick, and a rising tide is generally the better call. Keep an eye on the inside reef, which can get tricky, and note that high tide cuts off the beach in places.
Local Tips
Canggu is a beginner-friendly setup, though the shifting peaks keep you moving to stay with the sets. Expect the inevitable dawn crowd trading waves when it's working.
