Carcans is a beachbreak that works over sand, throwing up both lefts and rights. It's always quieter than nearby Lacanau, but that doesn't mean the waves fall short. Expect walls more often than hollow sections, though there's still plenty of power to work with.
When It Works
The bank draws swell from southwest through northwest, with a west swell the best match. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, and as a consistent spot it picks up plenty of swell through the year.
Wind and Tide
Look for an east offshore wind to clean things up. Carcans can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a forgiving, beginner-friendly beach, though it can get rippy, so keep an eye on the currents. The lineup turns moderately busy on summer weekends, then thins right out on autumn mornings, when the local surf club members are sometimes the only ones in the water.
Access
There's a car park with free parking right by the beach. Facilities cover restrooms, showers, camping, a lifeguard, and a surf school.
