Carola Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Carola is the most consistent wave around Puerto Baquerizo, also known as Wreck Bay, a right-hand point that peels in front of the lighthouse. Puerto Baquerizo holds the greatest concentration of decent surf spots in the Galapagos and serves as the administrative capital, so it also has the bulk of the islands' accommodation. The wave breaks over an uneven, boulder-strewn lava rock reef and delivers a long, tubular ride with a fast, heavy drop.

When It Works

Carola draws swell from southwest through north (SW-N), with northwest (NW) the best match, and a southwest swell can also sneak in. This right-hander is usable from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft, so it stays rideable well into big surf. Consistency is moderate, meaning it breaks fairly regularly rather than every day.

Wind and Tide

Look for east (E) offshore wind. Be ready for the southeast trades to blow into the barrel, which makes the already fast drop trickier to commit to. It works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call, and mid tide tends to help with makability.

Local Tips

Carola suits intermediate surfers, but it asks more of you as the swell builds, with a heavy drop and fierce duck-diving when you get caught inside. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it is working.

Access

Getting out to Carola means a roughly 10-minute boat ride or a 2 km walk from the port.
