Carraspio is a rivermouth beachbreak beside the picturesque fishing town of Lekeitio, where peaks form over sand and can break both left and right. The wave shape depends on how the shifting sandbars are lining up, so quality varies with the banks.
When It Works
The break draws swell from northwest to north, and it is at its best on a northwest swell. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, but this is a rivermouth that needs a fairly large swell to really get going, so lean toward the bigger end of that range. Consistency is moderate, so it pays to time your sessions when the swell lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southwest offshore wind, which also gives the spot some shelter when it is blowing from that direction. Carraspio can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers, and the lineup rarely gets crowded, though it can fill in during the peak summer months.
Access
There is free parking along the road and camping nearby, with lifeguards on the beach through the summer. Be aware of a small amount of estuarine pollution around the rivermouth.
