Cave Rock Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Cave Rock is a world-class right-hand reef break that fires Hawaiian-style barrels across a shallow reef. It earned its fame through Shaun Thomson and the Free Ride generation of the '70s, and it still throws gaping, spitting tubes when the surf is on. The break splits into two takes: the Pool section peels in front of the tidal sea pool, while the gnarlier Rock rights break opposite the rock that gave the spot its name.

When It Works

The wave comes alive once the swell pushes overhead, whipping up long, hollow rights. It draws swell from southwest through southeast, with south swell the best match, and it holds a wide working range from 1.5 m / 5 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft. A consistent performer, Cave Rock is at its best when a south swell wraps into the reef.

Wind and Tide

Look for northwest offshore wind, which often arrives as a morning land breeze drifting down from the mountainous interior. The reef can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is a wave for experts only. The reef is unforgiving and shallow enough to snap both boards and surfers who push too hard, so it rewards confidence and punishes mistakes. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it turns on. Paddling out at either section is a real mission, so time the lulls carefully. It's not the sharkiest spot, but keep an eye out.

Access

There are restrooms, showers, and a lifeguard on hand, plus a car park with free parking and roadside parking nearby.
