Chesterman Beach (South) Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Chesterman Beach (South) is a sand-bottom beach break near Tofino that hides a defined left-hand wedge against the rocks in the eastern corner. Facing almost directly south while the region's predominant swell comes from the west, it is likely the least consistent of the popular beaches close to town. When it does line up, the corner delivers short, bowling wedges with plenty of speed for powerful turns, launching closeout sections, and the occasional sneaky tube off the peak. The bottom is clean sand with no rocks, and the paddle back to the peak is about as short as Canadian beach breaks get.

When It Works

The beach draws swell from south to southwest, and it really comes alive on steep, long-period southern-hemisphere swells. It maxes out easily, so the corner wedge tends to be at its best as the interval drops on the second or third day of one of those swells. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, roughly waist to head high on the beach. The season runs March through October, covering spring, summer, and autumn.

Wind and Tide

Look for northwest offshore wind, with a workable wind window running southwest through north to northeast. Mid and high tide are the ones to target, and a rising tide is generally the better call.

Local Tips

Shortboards, fish, funboards, and longboards all have a place here, and the wave suits everyone from beginners through to experts. Expect a moderately busy lineup, often with beginners and group surf lessons on the beach, which also means watching for oncoming soft tops. The corner zone is usually left alone, but there can be a heavy local contingent when it turns on. If you are not from town, sitting on the peak and catching sets there likely won't prove too fruitful. The vibe is still generally friendly, and the water is very clean.

Access

There is a large, open parking lot at the east end of South Chesterman Road, with a 30 yard trail down to the beach.
