Chesterman Beach Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Chesterman Beach is a sandy beach break near Tofino that needs a bit of size to break, since it sits fairly sheltered. The southern end is the mellower option and suits learners, while the north end picks up bigger, punchier waves. North Chesterman, known simply as "North," is the steepest and punchiest of the peaks here. It stays quiet through much of the summer, letting the sandbars build, so the autumn swells arrive to steeper, wedgier waves breaking close to shore. Offshore reefs and islets break up the swell lines to form peaks, but they also mean the spot wants more size to really come alive.

When It Works

The beach breaks over sand and draws swell from southwest through northwest, with west swell the best match. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.2 m / 4 ft. Best from autumn through spring, roughly October to April, it delivers short, punchy two-to-three-turn waves peeling both left and right. On bigger days, especially early in the season, expect powerful, dumpy inside sections to push through, though most days paddle out easily. It's a decent, dependable option when the swell lines up.

Wind and Tide

Look for east offshore wind, which clears the residual rip and bump and brings the spot to its best. It can work across all tides, softer at high and punchier and more walled at dead low, but a rising tide through the lower to mid range is generally the better call.

Local Tips

Beginners can find their feet at the southern end, and the beach suits shortboards, fish, and funboards. Expect a busy lineup, especially on weekends with travellers and beginners on rental gear, and thicker local crowds on bigger offshore days when options are limited. The atmosphere is somewhat reserved and can get competitive on standout days, but stays friendly overall.

Access

There's a surf school and surf shop nearby, plus a car park with free parking. Lots fill up quickly, often by noon in summer.
