Country Club is a sandy beach break in front of the Golf Course, and the new name for what used to be called Africa Beach. It picks up lefts and rights and is an approachable place to surf. There are also lefts and rights up at the rivermouth, but that stretch is sharky, rip-torn and a jet-ski hangout. The pier at the south end, which marks the edge of Battery Beach, is a shotgun pier: the two pipes poking out of the end look like you are staring down a barrel.
When It Works
The waves break over sand and take swell from southwest through north to northeast (SW-N-NE), with east the best direction. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft and is moderately consistent. Swell out of the south always brings more size, though the spot suffers in onshore winds and from longshore drift. When the wind drops calm, you can find a good shorebreak running from the casino down to the Mgeni rivermouth.
Wind and Tide
Look for west offshore wind. It can work through low, mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The waves suit beginners well. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it is working.
Access
You will find restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, a surf school and a surf shop here. For parking there is a car park with free parking, along with paid and roadside options.
