Overview
Derecha del Cartel is a quality right-hand reef just south of Spanish Left, breaking in front of the Metropolis building and wrapping into the bay at El Conquistador. It throws long, peeling walls that section into shreddable bowls with good tube time, all over an unforgiving lava reef. Rides run longer here than at Spanish Left, and it's a regular contest venue. The take-off is tight and challenging, and the reef sits very shallow with rocks just below the surface in places.
When It Works
The wave draws swell from the west to northwest (W-NW), with northwest (NW) the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, holding size well up to double overhead when the swell is big. It's a consistent spot, and it comes into its best form through autumn and winter, roughly October to March.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind. It breaks through all tides, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate-friendly wall that suits a shortboard, fish, or bodyboard. Expect a busy lineup when it's working, with a high standard of surfing on the tight peak, so follow the etiquette and wait your turn. Water quality can be a concern, with reports of sewage discharge from aging infrastructure.
Access
There's a car park with free parking plus roadside options nearby, and a simple paddle out through the channel. The walkout to the water is tricky over sharp rocks, so take care getting in.
