Donghe Rivermouth is a sand-bottom beach break that many rate as the best wave on the island. It sets up on shifting, river-sculpted sandbars, with two main peaks either side of the rivermouth serving up long walls and plenty of open face to work, plus the occasional short barrel section.
When It Works
This is an extremely consistent spot and a genuine swell-magnet, pulling in just about all the seasonal swell that comes through. It draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south, with a southeast swell the best match. It works across a wide range, usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, and it holds size well, keeping good shape even on the bigger days. With both lefts and rights on offer, there's room to move around as the banks shift.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northwest offshore wind to groom the peaks. The break works through all stages of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The wave quality here means it suits intermediate surfers rather than beginners. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on, and crowds have been building as new local surf shops open nearby and visiting surfers come to film Taiwan's surf. Keep an eye out for rips.
Access
There's a surf shop nearby, and you'll find a car park with free parking as well as roadside parking.
