Dunes sits about two thirds of the way down Noordhoek Beach, a sand-bottom beach break that can turn on genuinely epic barrels. It runs both left and right, and it is a consistent setup, but it is also powerful and unpredictable, with heavy paddle-outs once the swell pushes overhead.
When It Works
Dunes draws swell from the south through to the west, and it comes into its own on a southwest (SW) swell. It is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.1 m / 7 ft, so there is a wide working window before it gets too small or too heavy to handle. The break really lights up in moderate southwest swells and the summer southeasterlies.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southeast (SE) offshore wind to clean it up. It can work through the full tide, from low to high, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a wave for experts. When it is on it can be close to perfect, so expect a busy lineup, and the roughly 30-minute walk in does little to thin the crowds. Beyond Dunes, the outside bombora at Sunset is a serious drop that the local licensed tow crews take on.
Access
There is a car park with free parking, and from there it is around a 30-minute walk in to reach the break.
