Overview
Ehukai is a reef break along the Pupukea stretch, breaking over an uneven lava shelf and sand. On smaller days it throws up mellow reef peaks that offer some respite from the heavier surf nearby, and when the sand banks up just right the lefts and rights turn hollow and genuinely epic. This same stretch holds the shallow, spitting pits of Gas Chambers.
When It Works
The break draws swell from west through north to northeast, with north (N) swell the best match. Peaky, head-high north swells bounce around here and open up room for turns, airs and barrels. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft and is moderately consistent, so you'll find rideable windows without it firing every day.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind to clean it up. It can work through low, mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers, and when it turns peaky it gives less confident surfers a forum for turns, airs and barrels. Expect a busy lineup when it's on.
Access
