Overview
El Charco is a long, lined-up left that peels over an uneven reef. It's powerful, tubular and genuinely challenging, and it needs a head-high swell before the many sections, which break separately on smaller days, start linking into one long ride. When it gets big, an outside peak called El Pozo comes into play for big-wave chargers.
When It Works
The break draws swell from northwest through north, with northeast (NE) the optimal direction. It's usable from 1.8 m / 6 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, and it really comes alive at the top of that range, once there's enough size to connect the sections into a proper point ride.
Wind and Tide
Look for a south (S) offshore wind. The wave favours high tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave. Heavy currents, shallow lava rocks and localism all add to the challenge, so it rewards confident surfers who know how to handle a demanding point.
