Overview
Esmeralda, also known as Costa Esmeralda, is a reef peak that breaks over uneven reef and sand and throws both lefts and rights. Despite the name, the water never takes on the emerald green it suggests.
When It Works
The peak draws swell from south to southwest, with south the best match. It can feel slopey and mushy when the surf is small, but it comes alive once a solid south swell fills in. It works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. Expect it to be somewhat inconsistent, and the banks shift with sand distribution, so the shape varies from session to session.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind. The reef breaks on mid to high tide, with a rising tide the better call.
Local Tips
This is an approachable, beginner-friendly wave, and the lineup usually stays fairly quiet even when it's working.
