Overview
Faja dos Cubres is a world-class left-hand pointbreak that wraps down the rocks of the faja, breaking over boulders. It runs closer to the rocks than the other fajas, so smaller days come with boils and exposed rock in the lineup. The wave itself is heavy and seriously powerful, with freight-train sections and wide-open barrels, and when everything lines up its three sections connect into what is probably the longest wave in Portugal.
When It Works
The point draws swell from west through north to northeast (W-N-NE), with a northwest (NW) swell the best match — that is when the sections link up and the wave shows its full length. It works from 1.5 m / 5 ft to 6.1 m / 20 ft, though it will not handle the truly massive days, and triple overhead will test even experts on longer boards.
Wind and Tide
Look for a lighter southwest (SW) wind: the lineup is very exposed out the back, so the calmer offshore days are the ones to pick. The wave can break through the whole tide, but a rising tide is the better call, with low tide on the push the preferred window.
Local Tips
This is a wave for experts only. Timing the sets makes getting in safe enough, but getting back out can be an ordeal, with sweeping currents and heavy whitewash pushing through the rocks — board and body damage is common here.
