Overview
Ferrugem is a super-consistent beach break that acts as a multi-directional swell magnet, with sand-bottom peaks that pack some real punch. Lefts fire at the north end, rights peel off the rocks at the south end, and a run of rip bowls sits in between. When it is flat here, it is generally not happening anywhere.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), and northeast is the best match, feeding the lefts up at the north end. It stays consistent across a wide range and works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, so there is usually something rideable when other spots go quiet.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind to clean up the peaks. The sandbars break through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The mellow, sand-bottom peaks make this an approachable spot for beginners. Expect a busy lineup when it is on, and the best peak in particular can get overbearing, so it is worth scanning the other bowls along the beach or heading round the corner to Praia da Barra, keeping in mind the river run-off there can be off-putting.
Access
There is plenty of support on hand, with restrooms, showers, camping, a lifeguard, a surf school, and a surf shop. For parking, there is a car park with free parking as well as roadside spots.
