First Beach surf guide

First Beach, also known as Wizard Beach, is a beach break located on an island that you can access by boat. The beach features a combination of sand and uneven reef, which affects the surf conditions. Although it may not be the best surf spot around, it’s a reasonable option when other places are flat. The beauty of the beach itself can make up for its average surf quality, making it a decent place for a surf day.

The surf here works best on a north-east swell, although it can handle northwest and east swells as well. You can expect decent waves around 1ft (0.3 meters), and the breaks can be found both left and right. The best time to surf is during low, mid, and high tides. However, be aware that the waves can get suckier and dumpier when there's a bigger, longer period swell. Watch out for rip currents in the channels between the scattered reefs, which can be tricky. Overall, First Beach tends to be suitable for beginners looking to practice their skills.

To get to First Beach, you’ll need to take a boat and then walk for about 20 minutes across fields, with the trail getting muddy in spots. If you’re up for a bit of a trek, it can be worth it, especially when other spots aren’t delivering. Keep in mind that while it may not be the highest quality surf, the setting and the chance to catch some waves make it a spot to consider when planning your surf trip.
