Paunch is a quality reef break located just a 10-15 minute drive from town. As the closest surf spot around, it tends to draw quite a crowd, including surf schools, so be prepared for company in the water. The waves at Paunch can be pretty fun, especially when the swell is around 2ft (0.6m). The north-east swells are optimal here, but it can also work well with north-west and east swells. The lefts are the main attraction; they start with a nice tubular section which then opens up into a more workable wall, offering a bonus inside cover-up. When the swell gets bigger, the wave can get really sucky. There are a few rights off the peak, but they aren’t as rewarding as the lefts. The spot works best with a low to mid or high tide, and the preferable wind direction is from the west. Overall, this spot is best suited for intermediate surfers.
