Gaviotas is an average beachbreak that peels both left and right over sand, and its mellow nature makes it a solid option for beginners.
When It Works
It draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), with northeast (NE) swell the best match. The break is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. It sits among a string of beaches along this east coast that pick up wind swells from the northeast to the south, so if it isn't firing, El Medano, Poris de Abona, and Candelaria are all worth a look.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind, though the break also stays clean in northerly winds. It works across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
