Goukamma is a rivermouth beachbreak that throws up shapely left and right peaks. The banks are entirely sand-dependent, so the setup shifts as the sand moves. Red alluvial soil in the river outflow discolours the water and gives cover to the ever-present sharks, and there has been a shark attack at the adjacent Fish Bomba reef.
When It Works
The peaks break over sand and draw swell from east through south to southwest (E-S-SW), with south swell the best match. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Expect moderately consistent surf, with worthwhile windows when the sandbanks and swell line up.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast offshore wind to clean things up. The peaks work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Goukamma suits intermediate surfers, and the lineup usually stays fairly quiet when it's on.
