Overview
Grindavík is an exposed, swell-magnet reefbreak that pulls in waves when much of the coast stays flat. It breaks over an uneven reef and throws up racy right walls at all sizes, with the occasional left. There's always a lot of water moving here, and the bottom hides barely submerged rocks and urchins.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from southwest to southeast, with south (S) swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 7.6 m / 25 ft, and the character shifts hard across that span: friendly and manageable around 3 ft, then genuinely frightening by 8 ft, when it turns into heavy water with crunching barrels. Consistency is a real strength, one of the most reliable spots around even through summer, though it's rarely perfect.
Wind and Tide
Look for north (N) offshore wind, which is also what cleans up the face. Anything else tends to leave steep take-offs and bumpy walls. It works through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide the better call. The barrels reel over very shallow reef at low tide that gets covered as the water fills in.
Local Tips
This is an expert-level wave, and the shallow reef, moving water, and urchins all back that up. The lineup stays fairly quiet, and finding someone to paddle out with can be the harder part. Because it's so exposed, it can also get messy very quickly.
Access
From the town of Grindavík, drive straight through until the road ends, then turn right and follow the coast west for two to three minutes. There's free parking and camping.
