Overview
Il Sasso is a rock-ledge reef that throws up a clean A-frame, with the right the longer of the two walls as it peels over a shallow ledge. It breaks both left and right in clean water, and it's a good one to check when nearby Portonovo has gone too small.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from southeast (SE) through south, with southeast (SE) the direction that lines it up best. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, so it needs a bit of size on it before it starts working.
Wind and Tide
This one really wants calm, near-windless conditions to show its best, with northwest (NW) the offshore wind direction when there is a breeze. It breaks across low, mid, and high water, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
Il Sasso suits intermediate surfers. Expect company in the water through the summer months.
Access
Getting in takes a long walk down a trail that is often muddy. From Sirolo, head north for about 500 m and turn right toward the cemetery and Spiaggia dei Sassi Neri; the wave breaks in front of Restaurant Da Silvio at the north end of the steep bay. There is free parking.
