Inchydoney Surf Forecast Guide

Inchydoney is a south-facing strand within striking distance for Cork surfers, with a variety of fun beachbreak peaks shaped by rivermouths at either end. The banks are constantly changing, so the peaks shift around. Both sides offer cruisey, longboard-friendly waves, while a faster right breaks off the mini headland in front of the hotel. The long lefts on the east side rivermouth can occasionally go hollow, and they're best at lower tides. Waves here are fun rather than world-class, but with good timing there's plenty to work with.

When It Works

The beach draws swell from southwest through southeast, with southwest the best match, and it picks up windswell too. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, with waist- to head-high the typical size. Peaks break both left and right over sand. It can be inconsistent year-round, so it pays to watch for the windows rather than count on any particular season.

Wind and Tide

Look for north offshore wind to clean things up. It can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. The lefts on the east side rivermouth are the exception, coming into their own at lower tides.

Local Tips

The lineup is usually quiet and can feel a little reserved, though locals and the surf school keep it busy at weekends. It's a good beach for beginners, and fish, funboards, and longboards all suit the mellow peaks. Watch for rips, especially when it's bigger, and be careful of strong currents on dropping tides at both ends and around the mini headland. The water is generally very clean, aside from some agricultural runoff through the rivermouths after heavy rain.

Access

Follow signs to Inchydoney Island Lodge and park by the hotel on the central headland, or park in the village and walk onto the beach. Parking is free, with roadside options as well.
