Indicators (Raglan) Surf Forecast Guide

Indicators is the longest, fastest and most critical of Raglan's three points, a left-hander that peels over boulders. On smaller days it splits into two or three separate sections. The Outside Indicators peak throws a heavy take-off into a throaty barrel and picks up the most size of the three points, though it also catches the most wind. Down the line, hollow sections trade off with open performance and cutback walls, before a final Valley section speeds up and hollows out again. On the biggest days the wave can occasionally break far enough out to link with Whale Bay, and sometimes Manu, though it rarely joins the dots for the full two kilometres.

When It Works

The point draws swell from southwest through northwest (SW-NW), with southwest the best match. It is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft. Consistency is good, so rideable days come around often, and the wave holds an excellent standard when it lines up.

Wind and Tide

Look for a southeast offshore wind. It works across low, mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call; the Valley section in particular hollows out as the tide drops.

Local Tips

This is the most competitive lineup at Raglan and strictly for expert surfers. Expect a very busy lineup when it's working.

Access

Getting out is a mission. Park near the end of Tohora Close, where the free roadside parking is limited and fills fast in summer, then take the walkway down to Whale Bay and follow the shoreline west to the next bay. From there you either paddle across from the lagoon or pick your way over the rocks. Restrooms are available.
