Island Beach State Park Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Island Beach State Park is a sand-bottom beach break with an endless run of peaks stretching all the way down to the jetty at the southern end, set in a pristine but sensitive protected area.

When It Works

The beach draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), with southeast (SE) the standout direction and rights the pick of the peaks. Waves break both left and right along the sand, and the shape turns hollow on lower tides. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, and it's a consistent break that rarely goes quiet.

Wind and Tide

Look for west (W) offshore wind. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, though a rising tide is generally the better call, while lower tides bring out the hollower peaks.

Local Tips

This is a beginner-friendly beach, and the lineup usually stays fairly quiet even when it's on. Keep an eye out for currents and jellyfish in the water.

Access

Reaching the peaks takes a 4WD or a long hike down toward the southern jetty. In summer, get there early before the gate closes to protect the area. Expect an entrance fee and paid parking in a car park, with some restricted parking, plus restrooms, showers, and a lifeguard on the beach. With a 4WD pass and an intention to fish, you can camp on the sand for up to three nights.
