Overview
Iwaya is a beachbreak sitting near the lighthouse at Tominohana, and it doubles as a contest site when the waves show up. Everything breaks over sand, and both lefts and rights are on offer.
When It Works
The beach picks up swell from west through north to northeast, and northwest swell is the best match. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.5 m / 5 ft, so there is room for a small day to still be worth the paddle. Iwaya can be somewhat inconsistent, so it pays to time your session around a swell that lines up rather than turning up on spec.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast offshore wind to clean things up. The beach can work through most of the tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
The sandy bottom and mellow beachbreak shape make Iwaya a friendly option for beginners. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it works, especially on a weekend.
Access
There is a car park with free parking, plus roadside parking if it fills up. Restrooms and showers are on hand, and the beach is lifeguarded.
