Overview
Jinluan Bay is a 5 km crescent of sand on Dongshan Island, sitting about 6 km east of Dongshan Town. Several peaks break along the beach, and rivermouths at the centre and the northern corner comb the sandbars into some quality shape. You will find both lefts and rights over the sand.
When It Works
The bay draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), with northeast the best match. Big winter northeast swells sweeping down behind Taiwan are the most reliable, though summer east and southeast swells also serve up surfable waves. With the full swell window open, it stays more consistent than most spots around. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind to clean it up, since the beach can get rippy and blown-out. It works through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a friendly spot for beginners, and the lineup usually stays fairly quiet. Keep in mind that the water quality can be compromised by the big rivermouth just up the coast.
