Fujian sits on China's southeast coast, facing the Taiwan Strait, and its waves arrive mostly from the east through the northeast across a run of sandy beach breaks. This is one of the more approachable stretches of the Chinese coastline for surfers, with most spots suiting beginners and holding shape on the small side, working from around a foot of swell up to roughly two metres on the bigger breaks.
The core setup is straightforward. Swell comes predominantly from the east, east-northeast, and northeast, so exposed east-facing beaches pick up the most water, while a handful of spots also catch southerly and southeasterly pulses. Northwest wind is the offshore that grooms these beaches cleanest, which lines up with the cooler, drier season when the northeast monsoon puts more energy in the water. Tides are forgiving here: most breaks stay rideable through low, mid, and high, so timing leans more on wind and swell size than on the clock.
Surfing in Fujian spreads across several coastal towns and islands rather than one central hub. Pingtan Island, the largest island off the province, is the best-known zone, with beach setups that switch on when an easterly swell meets a northwest wind. Dongshan Island anchors the south of the region, and spots around Fuzhou and Junshan village add options as you work along the coast. Notable spots include Airport Lefts, Jinluan Bay, and Pingtan Island, which give a sense of the beach-break variety on offer.
Most of the region works over sand, which keeps it friendly for surfers still finding their feet and for anyone wary of shallow bottoms. The exception is a reef break aimed at experienced surfers: it wants a touch more size to break properly, prefers a southwest wind, and fires on that same east-through-northeast swell over an uneven bottom. If you are learning, stick to the sandy beaches; if you want more bite, that reef is the standout for confident surfers.
For planning, watch the east-quadrant swell and northwest wind together, since that pairing is what turns Fujian's beaches on. The bigger, cleaner days tend to arrive with autumn and winter systems, while smaller summer swell keeps the beginner beaches ticking over. Tune your expectations to a coastline that rewards the right window rather than delivering size every day, and Fujian reads as a genuinely surfable, low-pressure place to paddle out.
